Weed control in green areas or landscapes is difficult due to the complexity of many plantations. Green areas can include lawns, plant beds, perennials, shrubs, and trees. It is usual to plant more than one species of different plants in a green area, and there is often a mixture of perennial and annual ornamental plants. The wide variety of ornamental species, soil types, irrigation systems, slopes and the use of mulches create the need for a variety of options for weed control. There is also public concern about the use of chemicals in weed control and its effect on water quality, public health, and non-targeted species if the herbicide leaves its site due to runoff, derived from pesticides,

The choice of specific weed control tactics depends on the weeds present and the types of lawns and ornamentals planted in the area. Due to the many variables, weeds in landscape plantings are generally controlled with a combination of non-chemical and chemical methods. Use this publication as a review and how-to guide to options for proper weed control in plant beds and areas around trees and shrubs.

CONTROL OF WEEDS BEFORE PLANTING

A comprehensive approach using multiple methods is the most economical and effective option for controlling weeds. Develop a landscape or grassy weed management plan before planting by following these five basic steps:

Site evaluation

Before preparing the soil and when weeds are visible, evaluate the soil and the slope of the terrain, so that you can correct problems or anticipate future problems before planting. Among the characteristics of the site that must be taken into account are the drainage and compaction of the soil, shade and degree of water infiltration. Identify the weed species on the site, focusing on perennial weeds. The best time to identify annual winter weeds is mid to late winter; summer perennial and annual weeds are easier to identify in mid to late summer.
